The ultimate

The ultimate

The CNC control and drive electronics from Sieb & Meyer are considered the ultimate when it comes to processing delivery pallets for the electrical industry. There is hardly a delivery pallet that is not manufactured using technology from the Lüneburg-based company. The assemblies from Sieb & Meyer are produced on Sintro tables from Karl, among others.

What are the key factors that influence a successful business start-up? The well-known US start-up promoter Bill Gross has intensively supported more than one hundred start-ups and comes to the conclusion that even the best business idea will fail if the timing is not right. Being in the right place at the right time with your offer. This is the real key to sustainable success. A good example of this is the Lüneburg-based industrial electronics manufacturer Sieb & Meyer, where around 35 Sintro tables from Karl are in use.

Breakthrough of semiconductor technology in the early 1960s. Integrated circuits built on printed circuit boards replace the previously leading tube electronics as the key technology in electrical engineering. The trend towards miniaturization of electronic components is initiated. Microprocessors with unprecedented computing power are developed and memory capacities grow steadily. Gordon Moore formulates Moore's Law. A new market is emerging, and its potential is huge. That's why it's important to be quick now. Because only those who find their niche early on will be rewarded. Reinhard Sieb and Johannes Meyer are seizing the opportunity. With their small and flexible team of developers, they are able to react much faster than most to the rapidly changing technological requirements. This pays off. Sieb & Meyer's programmable controller for PCB drilling machines develops into a successful product - and still forms the basis for the company's long-term success today.

WORLD LEADER

Just two years after the company was founded, Sieb & Meyer relocated its headquarters to Lüneburg. Today, the company employs around 220 people. Sieb & Meyer continues to benefit from the courage of its founders to enter a completely new market as a first mover. The company is regarded as one of the world's leading manufacturers of CNC controls for drilling, milling and scribing printed circuit boards, frequency converters for high-speed motors and generators and servo amplifiers for various drives. Sieb & Meyer products are used, for example, in industrial robots, in screwdriving technology and in tool and special machine construction. Many of the printed circuit boards that are processed in the machine tools are later used in consumer electronics, for example in digital cameras, cell phones and televisions. The CNC controls from Sieb & Meyer are considered the ultimate in PCB processing due to the speed and accuracy that can be achieved with the controls. "The drilling spindles that drive our CNC controls rotate at up to 480,000 revolutions per minute," says Production Manager

Thorsten Berg, who has been with the company since 1998. That is an absolute record. "We are also very well represented in the small niche market in which we operate," says Thorsten Berg. "Only a few machine manufacturers develop and produce their own control systems. The other manufacturers use ours."

MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY

Sieb & Meyer's customers are mainly machine tool manufacturers. The most important sales markets are China and Taiwan, where the CNC controls are sold. Only the frequency inverters and servo amplifiers are mainly used in Europe. "What sets us apart is that we have always managed to adapt to the circumstances and move with the market," says Thorsten Berg. "In the past, we mainly supplied CNC controls to the USA, now it's Asia." However, the new market situation has changed the rules of the game. Of course, the increasingly global world economy has opened up new markets for companies like Sieb & Meyer, but it also presents them with major challenges. In concrete terms, this means above all that price pressure has increased, and with it the expectations of productivity. Sieb & Meyer therefore helps its customers to increase this with individual service. "From smaller requests to the development of entire devices, we often work on a customer-specific basis," says Thorsten Berg. "Others offer off-the-shelf products. We also implement complex customer requests individually. " This company philosophy also demands the greatest possible flexibility from Sieb & Meyer in production. This is why the production department has been working at Sintro workstations from Karl since 2007. "Back then, we were looking for new workbenches and compared the products of different manufacturers," says Thorsten Berg. "Due to their variability and flexibility, we opted for the Sintro tables from Karl. We have done very well with them and have therefore stuck with them." And for good reason: all Sintro workstations are used in production at Sieb & Meyer and are equipped with TFT and PC monitor mounts, grip trays, lighting and height adjustment as standard. However, even if these workstations are used for soldering, assembly and mounting, not every workstation requires exactly the same additional features. This is because the individual work steps differ from one another, at least in degree. "This is precisely why we rely on Karl's modular system," says Thorsten Berg. "The workstation systems from Karl offer us the necessary scope to adapt our production to current requirements."
